When you have no idea what to make for lunch or dinner, it’s usually best to look in the fridge and see what ingredients we have available. French fries are one of those dishes that almost certainly came about this way since they are made from ingredients that are always on hand.
It is an excellent and simple classic dish that we often ate in childhood, but we still enjoy making it now because it is impossible to make a mistake with it. Its rustic taste combines potatoes, eggs, and sausages and appeals to almost everyone. And if by chance you don’t like sausages (or don’t have them on hand), dried meat or some other meat product will also work great, and you can enrich everything with other favorite ingredients.
Although French potatoes are not made very quickly, and it takes a little more than an hour and a half to prepare, most of it is spent on cooking the ingredients and final baking.
The work itself is not too much and it mainly boils down to cutting and stacking the ingredients and making a simple topping of eggs, cream and milk, so anyone can make this dish without any problems, regardless of their experience in the kitchen.
After all, many people take their first steps in the kitchen by making french fries.
By the way, the very name of this dish is unusual because it does not exist in French cuisine, but was authentically created in these regions. Some speculate that the idea for the name came from the French potato gratin, which is baked in cheese and cream, but we will probably never know the real reason.
Be that as it may, that shouldn’t stop us from enjoying this excellent dish that shows how simple flavors are often the best.
